How To Market Yourself

If you’ve read Napoleon Hill’s classic book, Think and Grow Rich (and you really should read Hill’s masterpiece if you haven’t!), then you’re familiar with the name Carnegie…and with it, one of the greatest success stories ever told.

Born in Scotland into extreme poverty in 1835, Andrew Carnegie’s business career took him from textile mill bobbin-boy to the world’s leading industrialist. In 1901, US Steel Corp. was formed for the express purpose of buying Carnegie out, which it did for a cool $250 million.

What was Carnegie’s secret to acquiring such awesome wealth? Simple. He was a marketing genius!

Carnegie discovered and implemented three simple, powerful truths about marketing your way to success:

  1. Have a dream…the bigger the better.
  2. Create a team…the better the better.
  3. Focus, focus, and then, focus some more.

Carnegie knew how to paint a grand picture, and how to share that dream with others. To wit, he always had clear, written goals. Among his papers is an 1868 memo, written long before his career as a steel magnate had begun: “Thirty-three,” he wrote, “and an income of $50,000 per annum!” An outrageous sum in those days.

Carnegie understood how to assemble a winning team. Suggesting his own epitaph shortly before his death, he wrote: “Here lies the man who was able to surround himself with men far cleverer than himself.”

He also had a well-defined business philosophy, which centered on unwavering focus: “Put all your eggs in one basket,” he advised, “and then watch that basket.”

The supremacy of American business in the world officially began with Carnegie. And then do you know what he did? He gave it all away!

He gave his money away—Carnegie Hall, The Carnegie Endowment, The Carnegie Hero Fund, The Carnegie Institute, and he established over 2,800 libraries. By 1919, when he died, $350 million in all.

And he gave his knowledge away too; he hired Napoleon Hill to collect and distill all of Carnegie’s secrets to success, and those of 500 of his peers as well. Think and Grow Rich was one result.

Network Marketing was built on the same principles the great man discovered, implemented, and through constant practice perfected: The Dream… The Team… Focus… And then, give it all away.

Now that’s how to market yourself!

All the best,

MSC
