Leadership 101

On Becoming A Leader
Three questions to ask yourself

  1. Ask yourself: "What steps would a leader take?" and then take them. Because in the beginning—and even most of the way through—you can't be expected to know everything... However you are expected to do something! Because that's what leaders do—they do something! Remember that!
  2. Ask yourself: "Am I setting the example I want others to follow?" And a great clarifying question would be "If everyone I'm training did today what I did today, would this level of activity produce the results I'm looking for? Leaders set the example. Remember that!
  3. Ask yourself: "Who am I grooming to replace me?" True, leadership cannot really exist without someone willing to follow—thus we must always be asking the question "Why would someone what to follow me?"—and yet the only way to truly advance yourself, is to create leaders who can—and will—do whatever it is you're doing now... As leaders we must understand that every position runs its course... We give the President of the United States 4 years. And, perhaps if he finds favor with enough people, we give him 4 more... But that's it... Time to move on... What about you? What's the next step for you? The next promotion? And then the one after that? Whatever you're doing, odds are that to move over, up, or on, someone needs to equal your title, or maybe even take your place... Leaders train other leaders. Remember that!

On How To Find A Leader
Inquire... Observe... Assign...

  1. Inquire
What are you reading, listening to, or what classes
are you taking to improve your skills?
  2. Observe
When do they call for support or help?

    Good:        To share good news
To ask how they can help
                     To schedule 3rd party assistance

    Not Good:  To report problems
To ask "Where's the next meeting?"
To give you names of people to call for them
  3. Assign

Learn to become "discerning" and not "disappointed."
Different people are ready for more responsibility at different times...

Give them an assignment: book, tape or CD, recommend
a class.

Look for willingness: did they get the book, the tapes,
take the class?

Take time to teach: teach the system—teach what allows
you to move over, up, or on to something new-inside
or outside your company.

And remember that from a leadership prospective: This is
a teaching and training business; therefore, to become a
successful leader, you must learn how to teach and train.

All the best,

MSC

P.S. And now it's your turn! Read books , listen to
the CDs ,take the classes , and build something magnificent!
