Your Vast Potential

Have you taken your own measurements lately?
I am not talking about exterior dimensions of weight, height, etc.,
but more importantly the internal measurements of the marketing kind,
which sleep within you.
There isn't a ruler, a yardstick, or a measuring tape
in the entire world long enough to compute the strength and capabilities
of this giant who is slumbering within you.
The size, power, and potential of this giant are
unlimited. His force is that of a million
dynamos. His tireless energy is beyond comprehension. He is your
untapped potential, your latent ability to unfold, to develop,
and to close.
But, I have seen it over and over...this giant within
you will continue to lie there, slumbering in peaceful sleep, until you
make a conscious choice to wake him up.
Geologists around the world spend years of effort, and
millions of dollars, to locate hidden oil and mineral deposits beneath the
surface of the earth. But none of these sources of great wealth—oil, gold,
uranium, or diamonds—come close to matching the limitless power and
potential that lives within you.
A favorite story that I have told many, many times in
speeches illustrates this fact in a very complete and profound way:
Many years ago, a Chicago suburb was faced with a critical
water shortage. Its residents voted for a bond issue and built a dam to solve
the problem. But for several years after the dam was completed, this community
continued to suffer from a water shortage. Finally, a workman employed by the
water department discovered that the Three Main Valves covering the city's water
supply had never been completely turned on!
This same error exists today...in measurements of non-productive
human lives. I have seen it again and again—year after year, people enduring
shortages in every area of their lives, when all they have to do is open the
Three Main Valves governing their success supply:

Attitudes,
-
Habits, and
-
A Plan of
Action to achieve them.
For centuries horticulturists in Japan have made a fine
art of raising dwarf trees. These miniature replicas of full-sized trees
are produced by cutting and trimming the tree's roots as quickly as they
develop. Thus, the noble tree that nature intended to flourish and tower
in the wind is inhibited, stunted, and dwarfed for all time.
Too many people allow similar psychological tragedies to
happen in their own lives. They don't object when a conformed society cuts
their mental roots, and trims them down to be average, or below average,
until their spirit is shrunken, dwarfed, and becomes dormant.
We were intended by our Creator to thrive to grow...to
flourish. But, here is the catch: The decision
to do so is left to us.
We must first believe
with every fiber of our being that we have the power and the right of choice...
that we can always—every time—come out from behind the hindering circumstances
that have heretofore stopped us.
We are talking about
Attitude here. The potential within
each of us will come alive only in direct proportion to our personal
beliefs and convictions.
Those who develop and use a greater portion of their
untapped potential and capacity are never motivated by their government,
their corporation, their society, or their past.
These achievers accept personal responsibility for their
lives and take firm control of their own abilities, talents, and skills.
They tap their huge reserve of potential at will—by
taking
action again and again.
The philosopher William James, at the turn of the last
century, said something about waking up our potential when he said,
"The
one thing that will guarantee the successful conclusion of a doubtful undertaking
is faith in the beginning that we can do it."
With this attitude, the world is your cornucopia—your horn of
plenty. The road is open... The ladder is up... And the sky is the limit!
